Craft Register Wales' aim is to provide a definitive register of craftspeople working in Wales. The Register is the initiative of the Arts Council of Wales and Wales Craft Council and is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government. This service is being provided through Data Crefft. Equipment has been updated and the database revised to accommodate the widest possible range of craftspeople and makers - from small craft-based businesses through to the individual artist/craftsperson making one-off items. Access to Craft Register Wales/Data Crefft is through Wales Craft Council in Welshpool (Telephone: 01938 555 313, Fax: 01938 556237, email: info@walescraftcouncil.co.uk). Soon it will be possible to access some of the data directly from the WCC website.

Makers/Craft Businesses

To enable us to provide a good service to both the users of the service and the craftspeople of Wales, it is important that all craft-based businesses in Wales complete a registration form. Provided we have this information, we will be able to target requests to those craftspeople best able to respond and, equally important, avoid inappropriate approaches being made to busy craftspeople. There is no registration fee to pay and craftspeople completing the registration form will be entitled to have the quarterly newsletter "Crefft" mailed direct to them from the Arts Council of Wales.

The Public Service

The Register will enable us to respond to an ever increasing demand for information about the Crafts of Wales. We already receive enquiries from buyers: trade and commission (private and public), exhibition researchers, craft fair organisers, media (magazine and television) researchers etc. Craft Register Wales will allow us to target information in a great variety of ways: specific crafts, types of production, marketing/direct sales, commissions, galleries, craft fairs etc. and also craftspeople able to provide tuition or give lectures. Whether it is an enquiry for a craftsperson to produce a stained glass window for a church, or a trade buyer seeking toys in the £20 range, or a magazine wishing to run a feature on workshops open to the public, the Register should have the answer.
